Peer Review & Peer Rating
Peer Review & Peer Rating
What options do I have in Canvas WU with peer review?
In Canvas WU, students have the option of giving peer reviews. You can conduct this form of student-internal feedback via assignments and discussions.
Option 1: Peer review in assignments
In Canvas WU, a peer review can be created in the form of feedback on an assignment. This allows students to receive feedback on their performance from other students during the learning process. The following restrictions must be observed:
-
- Students must have submitted their own assignment before they can carry out a peer review themselves.
- The peer review is always based on a regular assignment, i.e. there is no separate submission deadline. Students may have to be reminded individually
- With peer reviews, individual students are assigned to each other. Feedback on group submissions or between groups can only be realized by applying a rather labour-intensive workaround.
- A CSV upload for assigning reviewers is not possible.
Peer reviews primarily support the refinement of concepts. In addition, this can support students' ability to reflect and improve their self-directed learning by analyzing their own performance
Option 2: Peer review in discussions
In Canvas WU, a peer review can be created in the form of feedback on a contribution to a discussion. This allows students to receive feedback on their discussion performance from other students. The following restrictions must be observed:
-
- Students must have written their own comments in the discussion before they can submit a peer review themselves.
- The peer review is always set up on top of a regular discussion, i.e. there is no separate submission deadline. Students may have to be reminded individually.
- The discussion may not be fully or partially anonymous.
With peer reviews in discussions, feedback can be given on the discussion behavior or the structure of the arguments without 'spamming' in the discussion feed. The feedback is also private and therefore not accessible to all other students. In group discussions with peer reviews, only your own group members can be assigned to make reviews.
What options do I have in Canvas WU with Peer Rating?
With a peer rating, you enable students to give an evaluation to all members of their own group. As a rule, this is used to determine whether the contribution of each group member has met the requirements. In Canvas WU WU, a peer rating can currently only be created via the workaround 'Assignment with peer review'. With the following three important restrictions:
-
- All reviewers must be manually assigned to the reviewers (i.e. each person may be assigned to 3 other people).
- In the submission, reviewers must always enter their own name so that the peer rating can be anonymous.
- The peer ratings become visible to reviewers when a grade for the task is released.
Peer rating is usually used to identify free riders in groups. Other advantages are the strengthening of critical judgment and the ability to take criticism.
Peer Reviews in Assignments
How do I prepare an assignment with peer review and assign students manually?
To create an assignment with peer review and then manually assign the submissions to students, proceed as follows:
1. Step: Prepare assignment
-
- Create a new assignment or edit an assignment for which there are already submissions and select Require peer reviews.
- Select Manually assign peer reviews if you want to assign the peer review at a time of your choice. You can then manually assign the reviewers to the submissions later under Peer reviews or have it done automatically.
- Under Assign Access - Manage Due Dates and Assign to, enter a due date and an until date in the assignment to give students a clear deadline for submitting the assignment.
- Click on Save.
In the settings, you can also specify whether students should carry out the peer review anonymously. You can also integrate a rubric to give your students a framework for the peer review.
2. Step: Assign students
Now assign students to submissions for peer review. You can assign peer reviews manually before or after the students have submitted them.
-
- Open the prepared assignment with the peer review.
- Click on Peer reviews on the right. You will now see a list of all students. If you point to a name with the cursor, the status of the submission is displayed. You can also view the submission by clicking on the name.
- By clicking on Give [Name] another submission to assess +, you can manually assign submissions to your students for correction.
Students can see on the start page under To do that they have received an assignment for peer review. However, the peer review can only be carried out after they have submitted a submission themselves. You can also exclude students from peer reviews by not assigning them manually, for example, if they have not (yet) submitted a submission. Or assign the same submission to all students.
Optionally, you can automatically assign reviews (at a later date). To do this, proceed as follows:
-
- Select the number of assignments (reviews per user).
- Click on the Assign peer reviews button.
This button is inactive as long as there are no submissions. An allocation is only carried out if there are at least two submissions. The number of allocations can be increased at a later date. Any submissions already assigned remain in place. It is not possible to automatically reduce the allocations. To do so, click on the rubbish bin symbol next to an assigned review to remove this allocation again.
3. Step: Inform students about peer review (optional)
Students will, depending on their notification settings, receive a notification that they have been assigned to a peer review. If necessary, send students a reminder after the assignment. You have the following options for this:
-
- You can create an announcement:
- Click on Announcements in the left-side menu.
Click on +Announcements at the top right.
Create an announcement and click on Publish.
- Click on Announcements in the left-side menu.
- You can send a notification:
- Click Inbox in the left global navigation bar.
Click on the pencil icon - Compose a new message.
Select your course and compose the message.
Click on Send.
- Click Inbox in the left global navigation bar.
- You can create an announcement:
This way, you can send a reminder about the peer review to all students or remind only some students directly via the inbox.
How do I prepare an assignment with peer review and assign students automatically?
To create an assignment with peer review and then automatically assign the assignments to students, proceed as follows:
-
- Create a new assignment or edit an assignment for which there are already submissions and select Require peer reviews.
- Select Automatically assign peer reviews if you want the peer review assignment to be made automatically at a fixed time
- Under Reviews per user, enter how many students each person should give a review to.
- Under Assign reviews, enter the date when the peer review should start. If you do not enter anything here, the assignment for peer review will start immediately after the assignment is due. To ensure that the corrections are distributed equally, we recommend automatic assignment at a slightly later point in time. This allows you to grant students deadline extensions for assignments.
- Under Assign Access - Manage Due Dates and Assign to, enter a due date and an until date in the assignment to give students a clear deadline for submitting the initial assignment.
- Click on Save.
In the settings, you can also specify whether students should carry out the peer review anonymously. You can also integrate a rubric to give your students a framework for the peer review.
Peer reviews are assigned automatically when the date at assign reviews or the assignment due date is reached. Students will receive a notification in their To do-list. The submissions are distributed equally so that everyone will receive the same number of reviews. People who have not yet submitted anything of their own will not receive any assignments and will not be assigned. However, manual adjustments are always possible. If you have already made manual assignments before the automatic assignment, these will be retained and will not be overwritten by the automatic assigning process.
NOTE: In assign reviews enter a date, which is after the due date of the assignment. This allows you to give students a grace period if necessary or remind them to submit the assignment in good time before the automatic assignment is carried out. This is because students who submit after the assigned review deadline cannot be included in the assignment for peer reviews and must be assigned manually.
How do I assign students a submission date for a peer review?
After an automatic assignment of a peer review, students see the peer review task under To do with the date of the automatic assignment, which is then naturally in the past.
Manually assigned peer reviews show the due date of the task itself in the task list of the student dashboard. However, once you have assigned a peer review, it will still show the due date of the assignment.
If you want to assign students a submission date for the peer review, proceed as follows:
1. Step: Prepare assignment
-
- Create a new assignment or edit an assignment for which there are already submissions and select Require peer reviews.
- Select Automatically assign peer reviews.
- Under Reviews per user, enter how many students each person should give a review to.
- Under Assign reviews, enter the date when the peer review should be submitted Leave enough time between the due date of the task and the submission date of the peer review.
- Under Assign Access - Manage Due Dates and Assign to, enter a due date and an until date in the assignment to give students a clear deadline for submitting the initial assignment.
- Click on Save.
2. Step: Assign students
After submitting the assignment (due and until date) but before the deadline for peer reviews (date in Assign reviews), proceed as follows:
-
- Open the prepared assignment with the peer review.
- Click on Peer reviews on the right. You will now see a list of all students. If you point to a name with the mouse pointer, the status of the submission is displayed. You can also view the submission by clicking on the name.
- Enter the number of peer corrections and click on Assign peer reviews.
Students will now see the peer review task under To do with the date previously set under Assign reviews.
If you choose this strategy, you should create a late submission policy so students know when they will no longer be assigned peer reviews: e.g. Assignment due November 20 at midnight, late submissions will be accepted until November 21 at 4:30pm, peer reviews will be sent on November 21 at 5pm (no peer reviews will be assigned after this date).
How do I see which students have already completed a peer review?
If you want to view the progress of your students' peer reviews, proceed as follows:
-
- Navigate to your assignment with peer review.
- Click on Peer reviews in the assignment at the top right.
- Search for the desired students in the overview or using the search bar.
- An exclamation mark indicates that no feedback has yet been given on this submission.
- A tick indicates that feedback has already been given on this submission.
- By clicking on a completed peer review, you can view the comments and annotations in the file preview.
This way you can always keep track of the progress of the peer reviews and, if necessary, ask individual students to submit them.
How can I remind individual students to do the peer review?
If students do not submit their peer review on time, you have the option of sending a reminder.
-
- Navigate to the assignment with peer review.
- Click on Peer reviews on the right.
- Use the mouse to navigate to the desired name and click on the bell symbol that appears next to a name.
The respective students receive a notification to the peer review on their to do-list. Depending on their notification settings, the alerted students also receive a notification by email.
In which ways can I evaluate an assignment including peer review?
You have various options for grading assignments with peer reviews. Please note that the system does not allow you to grade an assignment and the associated peer review as separate assignments.
This allows you to view and evaluate students' submissions and peer reviews:
Option 1: Grading via SpeedGrader
-
- Navigate to the assignment for which you would like to view the student fees.
- Click on the assignment.
- Select the SpeedGrader option in the right-hand menu.
- The SpeedGrader will now open, in which you can navigate to all students using the arrows (top right).
- Under Assessment, enter the points you would like to award for this student and optionally write a feedback comment in the comment field.
Here you can view the respective assignments and the peer reviews for them and rate the assignment. It is not possible to view a person's entire performance (submission and peer reviews on other submissions) on one page. You must call up the submission of the respective assigned student in order to view their reviews.
Option 2: Grading via peer review overview
-
- Navigate to the assignment for which you would like to view the student fees.
- Click on the assignment.
- Select the Peer Reviews option in the right-hand menu. You will now see an overview of the peer reviews
- By clicking on a name, you will always see the submission of this person, but not their submitted peer reviews. You can view the peer reviews via the submission of the assigned person.
- Enter the points you would like to award to this student under Grade and optionally write a feedback comment in the comment field.
Here you can view the respective assignments and the peer reviews for them and rate the assignment. It is not possible to view a person's entire performance (submission and peer reviews on other submissions) on one page. You must call up the submission of the respective assigned student in order to view corrections.
In Canvas WU, it is not possible to evaluate an assignment and the associated peer review in an assignment as separate performances. The following grading options are available in Canvas WU:
-
- You can only enter the grade for the assignment. The peer review itself is not graded.
- You can only enter the grade for the peer review in the assignment. The submission itself is not graded.
- You can enter the grade for the assignment in the assignment and then create a new assignment without a submission to grade the peer review.
- You can enter the grade for the assignment and for the peer review in the assignment (together). Pay attention to the number of points in advance.
- You can create a new assignment (without submission) to assess the peer review. The submission itself is not graded (recommended).
- No grade at all.
By grading a peer review you set an incentive:
-
- to make the initial submission, because without the submission students cannot participate in the peer review
- to participate in the peer review, as this part of the assignment is graded.
To ensure that students work seriously on the first submission, points can of course also be awarded for these. Either proportionately or as a separate individual achievement. As a rule, however, the peer review also serves to give students suggestions based on which they can/should then revise the original submission.
NOTE: Use a symbolic image to evaluate the peer review (example: 🔄 Evaluation of your participation in peer review)
What options are there for peer review in group assignments?
Peer reviews between groups or with group submissions can only be carried out to a limited extent The options are outlined below.
1. Option: Individuals give feedback on a group submission
Proceed as follows to realize a group scenario in which an individual gives feedback to a group of which he or she is not a member:
1.1 Step: Create group
-
- Navigate to People in the left-hand navigation menu and click on +Group set to create a group set.
- Choose a meaningful name for the group set (e.g. 0815 - Basics of Canvas)
- Under Group Structure, select how you want to organize the groups.
- You can split the number of students per group - e.g. 4 students/group.
- You can split students by number of groups - e.g. 4 groups in total.
- You can create the groups later - each group must be created individually.
- Click on Save
1.2 Step: Create assignment
-
- Use an existing assignment or create a new assignment for peer review.
- Click in Group Assignment This is a group assignment.
- Assign the desired group set with all groups to the assignment.
- Select Require peer reviews and Assign peer reviews automatically.
- Enter a date for Assign reviews.
- Under Assign Access - Manage Due Dates and Assign to, enter a due date and an until date in the assignment.
- Click on Save.
When the assigned reviews-date or alternatively the due date of the assignment is reached, all students are assigned the assignments of other groups. For 3 groups maximum 2 assignments. For 4 groups, a maximum of 3 submissions, etc. While working on the peer review students do not see what others have already entered as a review for the same assignment. After submitting a review, all members of a group have access to this review via the gradebook.
ATTENTION: Do not select: ‘Allow intra-group peer reviews’. Otherwise, some students would also be assigned their own group submission.
2. Option: The group gives feedback to a group
A feedback scenario in which one group gives feedback to another group can only be solved in Canvas WU via a workaround. The scenario is solved via group leaders who are manually assigned to each other for review. The group leaders have the task of sharing the assigned submission with their own group, as well as coordinating and entering the review. The name of the group leader therefore acts as a proxy for the name of the (underlying) group. Proceed as follows to realize a feedback scenario using a workaround in which one group gives feedback to another group:
1.1 Step: Create Groups
-
- Go to People in the left-hand navigation menu and click on +Group set to create a group set.
- Select a meaningful name for the group set (e.g. 0815 - Basics of Canvas)
- Under Group Structure, select how you want to organize the groups.
- You can split the number of students per group - e.g. 4 students/group.
You can split students by number of groups - e.g. 4 groups in total.
You can create the groups later - each group must be created individually. - Under Leadership, click that you would like to assign a student group leader.
- Click on Save
- Make a note of the group leaders in the group overview that opens - these are labeled with a head symbol.
NOTE: You will need the names of the group leaders later.
1.2 Step: Create assignment
-
- Use an existing assignment or create a new assignment for peer review.
- Click on Group Assignment - This is a group assignment.
- Assign the desired group set with all groups to the assignment.
- Select Require peer reviews and Manually assign peer reviews.
- Under Assign Access - Manage Due Dates and Assign to, enter a due date and until date in the assignment.
- Click on Save.
1.3 Step: Assign peer reviews
-
- After reaching the due date of the assignment, navigate to the group assignment.
- Click on Peer reviews on the right.
- Now assign each of the (previously noted) group leaders to one or more other group leaders. The group leaders have the task of sharing the assignment with their own group members, as well as coordinating and entering feedback. The name of the group leader therefore acts as a proxy for the name of the (underlying) group.
The groups can now enter their reviews. After submitting a review, all members of a group have access to this review via the gradebook.
Peer Reviews in Discussions
How do I assign a discussion to a peer review?
In a graded discussion (and group discussion), you can assign discussion posts from students to other students for peer review. Students then see all the discussion posts of the assigned person, separately or in the context of the overall discussion, and can, for example by using rubrics write comments or suggest improvements.
1. Step: Activate peer review
Proceed as follows to set up a peer review for a discussion:
-
- Click on Discussions in the left side menu and create a new discussion or navigate to an existing discussion.
NOTE: The discussion must not be fully or partially anonymous.
- Click on the three small dots and Edit.
- Select Graded from the options. Possibilities are:
- Enter a real point value, e.g. 10 points, and select Display grade as points. This would allow you to grade the discussion performance of individual students.
- Enter 0 as the point value and select Display grade as Complete/incomplete. The assessment would then only be a placeholder for the peer review and the discussion performance itself would not be entered as a grade in the gradebook.
- Under Peer Reviews, click Require Peer Reviews.
- Select Manually assign peer reviews or Automatically assign peer reviews. For an automatic assignment, define how many assignments each student should receive and on which due date..
- Click on Discussions in the left side menu and create a new discussion or navigate to an existing discussion.
From now on, the peer review icon will appear in this discussion:
2. Step: Configure and assign peer review
As soon as there are posts in the discussion, you can start configuring peer review. Peer review should only start when the end date of the discussion has been reached and the discussion has been closed for comments.
-
- Click on Discussions in the left side menu and navigate to the discussion.
- Click on the three vertical dots.
- Click to Add a rubric if you want to work with a rubric.
- Click Require peer reviews and make the assigning of peer reviews manually or automatically.
NOTE: Only students who have added at least one comment to the discussion can participate in the peer review. This applies to both automatic and manual assignments. Students who have not submitted their own comments will not be assigned to a peer review.
As soon as peer reviews have been assigned, students will find the assignment of the reviews directly under Discussions and under Assignments. By clicking on the discussion, you will find the peer review information at the top of the discussion assignment. If a due date was entered for the discussion, students can also navigate to the assigned peer review on the start page via the To-do-list.
How can a peer review for discussion posts be viewed and graded?
The discussion posts and peer reviews can be viewed and evaluated in SpeedGrader.
Follow the steps below to view student discussion posts and peer reviews:
-
- Click on Discussions and navigate to the discussion.
- Click on the three small dots.
- Go to Open in SpeedGrader.
- The SpeedGrader will now open, in which you can navigate to all students using arrows (top right). Here you can see the comments of the respective student and the peer reviews for this student
Under Assessment, enter the points you would like to award for this student and optionally write a feedback comment in the comment field.
You can switch to the entire discussion by clicking on view the full discussion in order to understand the context of the comment.

As soon as you have made all assignments, you can click on Back to Assignment in the top right-hand corner.
Students can now view the assigned peer reviews on the assignment and can start peer rating their group members. Write an announcement to inform students about the assignment.
NOTE: A workaround for faster allocation could be: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Higher-Ed-Canvas-Users/Assigning-Intra-Group-Peer-Reviews/ba-p/261886Links to an external site.
How can I view and evaluate peer ratings carried out with assignments?
You can see whether all students have completed the peer rating in the peer review settings. In SpeedGrader, you can then view peer ratings and enter the assessment for the peer rating. The following instructions are for this:
Control of completed peer ratings
In the peer review settings, you can see at a glance whether all students have assessed all group members. To do this, proceed as follows:
-
- Navigate to the assignment that handles the peer rating and select it.
- Click on Peer reviews in the right-hand menu of the assignment.
- A tick next to the name of the student who had to be assessed symbolizes that the student has been assessed by the group member:
NOTE: An exclamation mark would indicate that a peer rating has not yet been carried out. In such a case, you can remind the student of the peer rating by clicking on the bell symbol next to the name.
View and grade peer ratings in SpeedGrader
-
- Navigate to the assignment that handles the peer rating and select it.
- Click on SpeedGrader in the right-hand menu of the assignment.
- In the right-hand side area of SpeedGrader, you can call up the ratings of different students using the drop-down field under Rubric (see illustration).
NOTE: If the peer rating is only carried out between group members with a group size of two people, you must also fill in the rubric in SpeedGrader for demonstration purposes. Only when two rubrics have been completed will they be displayed in SpeedGrader. Please also communicate to the students that the rubric had to be filled in by you and has no meaning.zieren Sie bitte auch an die Studierenden, dass das Bewertungsschema von Ihnen ausgefüllt werden musste und keine Bedeutung hat.
- In the Assessment field, you can enter the points achieved for the peer rating per student (see illustration).
Grading options
-
- Grading of peer rating performance: The grade can be entered directly in the assignment that handles the peer rating.
- Assessment of a person's own contribution to the group work:
- Average value from the rubric: If points were used in the rubric, an average value can be determined from the ratings from the group members. You can then use this average value for the assessment.
- Deduction of points in the group task: If free riders are detected by the peer rating and therefore earn fewer points in the group task, you can enter fewer points for this student in the group task. To do this, activate the option Award marks for all students individually in the group assignment settings. You can activate this after grading the entire group in order to enter a different grade for individual students.
Peer Rating from the Student Perspective
How do students carry out a peer rating with assignments
As soon as the task is published, students will see it in their ToDo list as a task (= a due date must be entered for this). Students then proceed as follows:
-
- Students enter their names in the text field and submit the assignment.
- After the manual assigning of peer reviews by teachers, students see the peer reviews (peer ratings) that are due for them. Students can see the peer reviews to be completed on the course start page in the right-hand side menu or they can navigate to the assignment and call up the peer reviews there to carry out the peer rating (see illustrations below).
- Students must complete the previously created rubric for each group member and can also enter written comments.
Where can students view the feedback from the peer rating that was carried out with assignments?
The feedback is sent to students as soon as the grade for the assignment is published. Students receive a notification and can view the feedback on the start page under Recent feedback and in the gradebook:
-
- All completed rubrics are displayed one below the other.
- Reviewers are shown as ‘Anonymous user’.
- Additional comments entered are also displayed separately and anonymized.
Students do not submit the work required for peer review. How do I proceed?
You have various options for dealing with students who have not yet submitted an assignment themselves.
1. Option: automatic assigning of peer review
Students are not automatically assigned and do not receive an automatic assignment to a peer review. You can assign the person retrospectively, but the person will only see a peer review as soon as there is a submission.
2. Option: manually assigning peer review
With manual assignments, students can only see an assignment for peer review once they have made their own submission.
You can simply exclude students without a submission from peer reviews or give them a grace period - preferably before the deadline for automatic assignment. You can also submit file uploads for the students.
Students submit the work required for peer review far too late. How do I proceed?
If students submit their assignments late, problems may arise with the allocation of peer reviews.
1. Option: automatic assigning of peer review
If the peer reviews have already been assigned and students submit them afterward, they will be excluded from the automatic assigning of peer reviews. You can assign them to these people manually or automatically by using the "Automatically assign reviews" button. However, this means that some students will receive more peer reviews than others and the late submitters will not receive any peer reviews themselves, unless you actively assign them to other students afterward, in which case these students would then have one more review to make. If no student has yet made a peer review (because you have temporarily blocked the assignment), you can also manually remove all assigned peer reviews by clicking on the rubbish bin icons and triggering a new automatic assignment.
2. Option: manually assigning peer review
With manual assignments, students can only see an assignment to peer reviews once they have made their own submission.
You can simply exclude students without a submission from peer reviews or give them a grace period - preferably before the deadline for automatic assignment. You can also submit file uploads for the students.

Assignment | Spantaneous feedback session | As a didactic opportunity to involve the students |
Simply configure a peer review spontaneously as a follow-up to an assignment. This allows you to respond flexibly when the quality of the submissions or the large number of students in a course makes it appropriate. |
Assignment | Practice round | To practice the basics of feedback situations with students |
Pick a submission and assign it to each student in an initial phase of peer feedback. Only after practice feedback and a discussion about it will all further assignments be made for peer review. The submission can also be from a demo user of your own. |
Module | Assignment chains | for feedback loops, e.g. academic writing tasks |
Use the requirements and sequencing in a module to sequence tasks with peer feedback. For example, for a text revision in several steps, in which the drafting of a text version is always followed by a feedback round. And then the next draft with the next feedback. |
Assignment | Evaluation of cooperation within the group | To be able to identify freeriders in groups | Allow students to give each other structured feedback on group collaboration and assign collaboration points for each individual group member based on this feedback. You can also add these points directly to the group task as bonus points, but then you have to activate the individual grading of group members for the group task. |
